From the makers of the 2x telecoverter... |

The wide angle lens every RS user has been clamoring for! |

Superb corner to corner sharpness! |

The lens that revolutionized the RS |
Yes, the most revolutionary underwater camera ever made may be out of production, but innovative new lenses for the RS continue to be designed. The first such ``after market" lens for the RS was the 2x Teleconverter from Germany. The 2x teleconverter doubles the focal length of the RS 50mm macro lens, thus making it a 100mm macro lens with continuous focus capability from infinity to twice life size. This precision teleconverter, imported exclusively by Chris Newbert and Birgitte Wilms, transforms the RS into the finest underwater macro system available. |
Now, from the same ingenious German optical designers, another revolution for the RS: a distortion-free, fully corrected 18mm f2.8 rectilinear ultra wide angle lens, featuring an incredible 100 degree angle of view! RS shooters will soon be able to delight in razor-sharp, ultra wide angle photography, without the pronounced, often undesirable barrel distortion of the RS 13mm fisheye lens, or without the unavoidable corner sharpness deterioration experienced by all housed-camera users. |
The widest available factory rectilinear lens for the RS is Nikon's 20 - 35mm zoom, and at the 20mm focal length, the angle of view is 80 degrees. By way of comparison, one would have to be 45% farther away from a subject at 20mm with the 20 - 35mm zoom than with this new 18mm lens! |
On land, this might be of minor significance. Underwater, the consequences are huge. With the 18mm f2.8 lens and the much closer working distances allowed, the photographer will enjoy: ïgreatly increased sharpness ïdramatically increased color saturation ïsuperior contrast The final benefit, overlooked by many, is the fact that the photographer will be able to balance the ambient light and the strobe light more effectively, as the strobe to subject distance will be less in every case compared with the 20 - 35mm zoom. |
Let us hasten to add, both the RS 13mm fisheye and the RS 20 - 35mm zoom lenses are outstanding pieces of equipment, and each serves a vital need for the photographer. However, the new 18mm will fill a huge gap in the lens line for the RS. This is the wide angle lens RS owners have been dreaming of. This is the wide angle lens RS owners have been clamoring for! |
The 18mm lens will retain the full auto focus and auto exposure capabilities of all RS lenses, and will rival the famous Nikonos 15mm lens (for the Nikonos V) in overall and corner sharpness. It will be constructed using 14 lens elements in 10 groups, with an aperture range of f2.8 to f22, and feature a coated optical glass dome. |
Finally, the minimum focus of the 18mm lens will be about 9", compared with the 20-35mm zoom at 1.2 ft. With the 18mm lens, close-focus SLR wide angle photography can be taken to new, exciting, and dramatic heights! The SLR viewing of the RS will completely eliminate the inherent parallax error experienced when doing close-focus wide angle work with a Nikonos V and the 15mm lens. |
