Papua New Guinea in 2001

Much ado about muck!

When you think ``muck", you think Milne Bay. And why not? Milne Bay made muck famous, even fashionable. But the problem with this claim to fame is that one might incorrectly assume that Milne Bay offers only muck diving, which is a good ten Clintonunits far from the truth. The Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea covers a vast expanse of ocean, and within its boundaries are some of the richest, most colorful fish filled coral reefs found anywhere. So great an area falls within this province that, in spite of the popularity of Milne Bay diving over the last decade, dozens upon dozens of potentially world class reefs remain either unexamined entirely, or rarely dived at all. The problem lies in the muck. It is so wonderfully interesting and contains such a wealth of rare or unidentified marine life, the coral reef riches of the area often take a back seat to the critter craze that grips everyone after their first excursion into the so called muck.

In truth, the majority of the muck diving involves little actual muck as the term is commonly understood. Most back-water, non-coral reef habitats get lumped into this category, particularly if they feature strange and bizarre creatures not normally found in the nearby thriving coral communities. We spend little actual time immersed in flesh-eating gooey ooze of unknown origin. But strange things can happen on the way to the pretty coral. Photographers find they can burn more film per dive, record more subjects per roll, than they might in several coral reef dives. What they sacrifice in dazzling reef scenics is more than made up for with the new and the

undiscovered. We try and strike a balance in the site selection for our Milne Bay tours.  At the same time, we think we should mold each itinerary to the strengths of the area being explored. Thus in Milne Bay the critter diving typically gets a bigger slice of our bubble pie.

Tiata means ``dolphin"

More like a private yacht

There are relatively few live-aboards that serve the Milne Bay province. Only two of these boats are small enough to access the particularly rich yet fragile critter areas, while big enough to provide a comfortable, even luxurious dive platform. Since we began diving Milne Bay, we have chosen Kevin Baldwin's elegant Tiata as our boat of choice. Hand-built to the standard of an expensive private yacht and lovingly cared for since her launching, at just 66 ft. in length she offers foot per foot more space than any other boat we've yet to see. This is in part due to her 17 ft. beam and 7 ft. draft, but more a result of Kevin's exceptionally well thought out design and spare-no-expense, cut-no-corners, damn-the-bank-account-full-speed-ahead  approach.  Tiata combines the artistry and craftsmanship of traditional shipbuilding with the most modern of technological advances in stability and seaworthiness. She features active gyro hydraulic roll stabilizers and passive extended boom stabilizers while at anchor to provide the maximum of comfort to guests. She harmonizes so gracefully with the sea that Kevin named her for one of the most beautiful animals in the ocean, the dolphin. In the local language of Kevin's wife's village, she is Tiata.

2001 Programs

2001 is just around the corner!

In late winter and spring of 2001 we'll run three consecutive two-week Milne Bay trips, with each trip now featuring fourteen full days of diving. While the 2001 price is higher than our 1999 program, remember it includes two extra diving days plus the arrival night on board for free. This averages just $13.50 a day more than 1999. Our program is over half full prior to this first public announcement.  We have so many guests anxious to return to Milne Bay they have instructed us simply to sign them up whenever we have confirmed dates. We limit each tour to just eight guests, so don't be left behind. Of course the Chris Newbert and Birgitte Wilms Slide Show Seminar Series is offered free to all guests. Combined with high quality on-board E-6 processing, our Papua New Guinea Milne Bay tours are ideal for all photographers looking to take that next big step in their work, all enjoyed in the context of remarkable diving, an incomparable boat, and the warm, gracious hospitality of Captain Kevin and his crew.
